New Orleans Music for the Flute Added to Preservation Hall Lessons
The goal of Preservation Hall Lessons is to bring the joy of New Orleans music into classrooms around the world – no matter how far students might be from the Crescent City.
The Preservation Hall Foundation is thrilled to announce that free sheet music for the flute is now included alongside existing free charts for the traditional instruments of a New Orleans jazz or brass band!
Teachers, music educators, musicians and jazz enthusiasts alike can download the free sheet music and accompanying lesson plans for high school or junior high-level marching and jazz bands, including parts for the drums, piano, sousaphone, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, and now, the flute.
Free sheet music for the flute is now available for the following songs:
When the Saints Go Marching In
Links to the free sheet music downloads are located in each lesson plan in the Materials section under Student Guides: Complete Instrument Guides with Sheet Music.
These charts were arranged by pianist and Preservation Hall Lessons contributor Meghan Swartz, who, in addition to performing at Preservation Hall every Friday evening, is one of New Orleans’ most in-demand pianists, arrangers, and music instructors.
Preservation Hall Lessons – the Foundation’s online collection of free lesson plans, student activities, and instructional videos led by Preservation Hall musicians – launched during ongoing COVID-19 venue closures in February of 2021.
Since the launch of the platform, over 30 musicians, culture bearers and educators have contributed to the expansion of Preservation Hall Lessons, adding new lesson collections on New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, Improvisation in New Orleans Music, New Orleans songs like “Mardi Gras Mambo” and “When The Saints Go Marching In” – with more in the works, including a collection of lesson plans on New Orleans jazz funeral traditions.
