Photo Montage: Kinfolk Brass Band Porch Concerts
This summer, we awarded 20 local bands, activists and organizations a Preservation Hall Foundation Community Engagement Grant to continue their amazing work in the midst of COVID-19. Join us for a photo spotlight on the Kinfolk Brass Band and their efforts to safely bring the joy of New Orleans music to the city’s quiet streets during lockdowns.

A primary source of income for the Kinfolk Brass Band, pre-COVID, was the constant stream of New Orleans weddings in need of brass bands. Now, musicians are turning to innovative ways to bring in funds while music venues are closed and many weddings are postponed.
As a result, the Kinfolk Brass Band has begun offering porch concerts. Richard Anderson, above, a Preservation Hall trombonist, co-founded the band with his brother Percy, saxophonist and trumpeter, as a way to bring their displaced musician friends and family back together after Hurricane Katrina.
The socially-distant concert series has enabled the band to persevere despite ongoing closures of bars, music venues and the myriad of traditional places they appear on a weekly basis. Preservation Hall drummer, Kerry “Fat Man” Hunter, below, participates in the Kinfolk porch concert on his signature snare drum.
